St. Katharine's Church of England school became a girls' secondary modern school c. 1937, having previously, as St. Katharine's practising school, been an all-age school. In 1962 it moved from buildings forming part of the training college complex to new accommodation near-by, entered from Pretoria Road. The school became comprehensive in 1967, retaining the Voluntary Aided status which it had enjoyed since 1952.
