The origins of the school can be traced back more than 500 years to 1429-30, with the formation of a Sang Schuil (Choir School) in the Cathedral. The close links with the Cathedral and city are an important and continuing feature of the school's heritage. The present building (Duke Street) was opened in 1970.

In 2016 the new school building in Brechin was described as “world class” by Deputy First Minister John Swinney at its official opening. Maisondieu Primary School now occupies the former High School site.
