Newborough Bar was an entry point to the Old Town of Scarborough and was part of the Town Walls.
This photograph is of the replacement gate built in 1843 but was demolished in 1890 as it was deemed a traffic hazard. The road at this point is now part of the town's pedestrian precinct!
(The reference to Bridlington Quay relates to the premises of the photographer.)
