Priestman Field Ditcher detail
Following WWI food shortages field drainage became a priority so that land could be used to grow crops. The Government asked the company Priestman Brothers in Kingston upon Hull to produce a machine for this work. Their solution in 1921 was the field ditcher, a land excavator. It was towed by a tractor which also powered the winch. Priestman received an award from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for this innovative new design. Pictured is a Priestman field ditcher at the Streetlife Museum in Hull. William Priestman died in 1936.
