The school opened on 14 October 1912 and was called Boreham Wood County Council School. Over the course of its history, Furzehill burned down in 1949. It was reported that Mr Jepps the then headmaster was seen in the playground in tears - luckily the fire happened after school hours and no one was hurt - pupils were sent to other locations to continue lessons including Hill House in Elstree and Shenley Village Hall. Furzehill transformed from a junior, mixed and infant school to a middle school in 1974. The school l was rebuilt but finally closed in 2001 being demolished in early 2006. In its place stands 90 homes, and a children’s centre.

A wealth of information about the school including some cine film footage from the 1950s and of the 1949 fire is in the hands of Elstree and Boreham Wood Museum.
