The School opened in 1928 as the first non-selective Modern School for Girls in the area. In 1946, it began to develop a bias towards nursing and nursery work. By 1949 it was known as a Secondary Practical School.

This school closed on 31 August 1990 and Outwood Academy Newbold now occupies the adjacent playing field site.

Violet Rosa Markham (October 1872 – 2 February 1959) was a writer, social reformer, campaigner against women's suffrage and administrator.
