In 1956 Heasandford Technical High School for Girls merged with Towneley Technical High School for Boys to become Burnley Technical High School taking both boys and girls. It became a comprehensive in 1972 known as Towneley Comprehensive School until finally, in 1974, it became known as Towneley High School.

The school then closed for good in June 2006 as part of the £250million Building Schools for the Future project which saw the creation of Unity College on a site nearby.

Lancashire County Council said that once the old building had been razed to the ground, the authority would be landscaping the site before handing it back to Burnley Council.
