The school started in Albion Street, Hull, in 1894 as the Junior department of the Municipal Technical School, with Dr. J. T. Riley as its co-ordinator and first Principal (from whom the school later took its name), moving to Park Street in 1898. The school was renamed Riley High School in 1926. During 1945 it occupied the former Boulevard Secondary School buildings and developed as a secondary technical school. In 1957 the school was moved to Parkfield Drive, off Anlaby Road in Hull.

When Riley Technical High School opened on Parkfield Drive in 1957. It had 700 boys and originated from part of the Technical College in 1926. It became a boys' comprehensive and was named after J.T. Riley, secretary of Hull's education authority.

The school was closed due to falling rolls ("What falling rolls?" I hear you ask!) amid pupil protests and a 2,120 strong petition presented to Robert Dunn, the under Secretary of State for Education.

Riley partially merged with Amy Johnson in its last three years (86 - 88) then became annexed to the Hull College of Further Education before it was boarded up and derelict by 2006. The school was finally demolished in 2007 just short of its 50th birthday.

The memory of the "Life of Riley" lives on and there are veterans of the old school with fond memories throughout Hull and the World, in all professions and walks of life.
