Prior to its transfer to Old Machar School Board in 1873, Ruthrieston School was run by the Deacons Court of Ruthrieston Free Church in a converted dwelling house leased from Mr Duthie of Ruthrieston. New buildings were constructed circa 1875, and management was transferred to Aberdeen School Board in May 1885. A new school was constructed and opened in June 1908, incorporating pupils and staff from Holburn Street School which had closed temporarily for reconstruction. The new buildings had accommodation for 338 infants and 728 boys and girls and included cookery, laundry, manual instruction rooms and assembly halls. The Infant Department closed on 30 June 1922, and infant pupils transferred mostly to Broomhill School. The school re-opened as Ruthrieston Intermediate School on 22 August 1922, drawing pupils from Broomhill School, Holburn Street School, Ashley Road School, Ferryhill School and Marywell Street Schools. From August 1939 the school was known as Ruthrieston Junior Secondary School, and from 1954 as Ruthrieston Secondary School.

The school was closed on the introduction of comprehensive education at the end of the 1972/3 session. Thereafter the school buildings were used as an annexe by Harlaw Academy. It was known as Harlaw Ruthrieston Annexe, then as Ruthrieston Annexe from 5 January 1976. All pupils enrolled at Ruthrieston Secondary School by 1973 were permitted to complete their education there as pupils of Harlaw Academy. The annexe was in use until 1979, when all pupils transferred to Harlaw's Albyn Place site.

After the school closed, the building became Ruthrieston Community Education Centre under the former Grampian Regional council.
