This school was based in what is now a grade I listed mansion. It became a school as a temporary measure in 1943 having been vacated after being a base for American and Canadian troops who had been involved with D-Day preparations. Its use as a school came about after the town's Senior Council School had been bombed (killing three pupils and two teachers.) The building was formally sold for use as a school in 1949.

In 1979 Shaw House school became a mixed comprehensive. In 1985 Shaw House was deemed unsafe due to serious structural defects leaving the building unused for a number of years. The school closed on 1 September 1999. It has since been restored and opened to the public as a venue for events, conferences, register office and as a historic attraction.
