Old Flour Mill / Warehouse by the River Foss, York
River Foss runs to the left, Wormald's cut is on the right.
Rowntrees Wharf is considered York’s best industrial building. It was originally one of the largest flour mills in Europe and founded by Henry Leetham in 1860. The building was designed by Walter Penty and towered over Hungate. The mill closed in 1930 and in 1935 it became the Rowntree and Co’s Navigation Warehouse. Cocoa beans continued to be transported to the wharf until the 1960s. In 1989 it was converted into apartments and offices by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
